History
The company was founded in the 1960 and was operating locally as a small family scrap trading business. Conditions in those days were hard but steady progress was made until 1974. With the Turkish invasion the business was seriously affected. Despite the harse conditions of early post-invasion period, the company was rebuilt.
In 1982 it was named CHARALAMBOS ECONOMIDES & SON LTD after its founder and his son Antonis Economides took over its management. A very fast rate of expansion and renovation was adopted -baling machines, the first shear, cranes, tracks, and the first aluminium smelting plant utilizing an induction furnace, were bought over a period of 10 years. Exports rose impressively. Plans for a new and bigger aluminium smelting plant materialized in 1999.
In the same year the company took over the German-owned ferrous scrap trading company ibs-Metal Recycling Ltd, which was based in Cyprus. Following substantial organizational and technological restructuring, the company was renamed ECONOMIDES METAL RECYCLING LTD.
In 2001, following the acquisition of a local scrap trading company, the number of yards increased and with it the market share. With the prospect of Cyprus joining the European Union in 2004 a refinement program was initiated. The company reviewed and upgraded its existing practices and introduced new ones.
At the end of 2003 E.M.R LTD obtains the first environmental license for collecting and processing of non-hazardous metal scrap. On June 2004 a license is obtained for the collection and treatment of End-Of-Life-Vehicles. Both licenses are in accordance to the relative E.U directives and local legislation.
The company is also contributing as an active partner to the package materials collection and treatment system.
The company is a full member of the Cyprus Recyclers Association and an associate member of the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR).
The horizon is always expanding for ECONOMIDES METAL RECYCLING
